In True Fire Sign Fashion, Upsahl Channeled ‘Unapologetic Energy To Make Her New ‘Sagittarius EP
Upsahl has been a great year. And her debut album, Lady Jesus last September, and her first world tour? This summer he found the answer: looking inside. The result is her new EP Sagittarius , a nod to the alternative pop star's astrological sign. (He is also a Pisces Moon and Libra Rising.)
For those unfamiliar with their astrological nature, Sagittarius is the sign of the fiery traveler and can always be counted on to be the life of the party… when they arrive. Upsahl concludes with his favorite lyric, "Hold my cup, let me a kickflip," from "Kickflip"—which is also his future viewer favorite and a song he can't wait to play live.
Taylor Upsahl — the musician's last name is his onstage nickname — grew up in a music-oriented family in Arizona and eventually got busy in Los Angeles, and the rest thrived. Upsahl has written songs for Dua Lipa and Madison Beer and is emerging as a great songwriting talent. Also, the music is really fun. Or, as his EP Sagittarius describes it, "uncompromising" and "intense, passionate and powerful".
What made you decide to make astrological themed recordings?
When I first went into the studio and wrote this summer, I wasn't writing about relationships or other people. The only inspiration I have is myself.
To do that, I had to learn this very healthy version of selfishness. Each song represents a different quality or part of me that makes me who I am. I thought, how can I say who I am in one word? and I've always been very busy being a textbook shooter. I think that perfectly describes who I am and all the energy of the EP.
What is your general inspiration for Sagittaire , the music?
My goal really isn't to worry about every single song that seems to belong to the same genre. It seems to me that this genre no longer exists. I want to make a real dance record with Into My Body. I've heard a lot about Prince. I love how these voices whisper and whisper in my face. For "Kickflip," we listened to Snoop's "Drop It Like It's Hot."
Speaking of "To My Body", I read that you grew up with parents involved in the punk scene, and there's a video scene where you're in a room with a microphone plugged in. It smells like early 2000s pop punk. I wonder what your personal visual inspiration was, since you mentioned Prince and Snoop Dogg for another song.
This is an interesting question. The interesting thing about this EP is that we have to create images for each song. I want it to be a visual experience and an audio experience. I think there will always be a part of me that will be inspired by the punk scene. The main thing I took away from him as a player was that “nothing about me” kind of energy. The same goes for No Doubt and Gwen. That's why it was a big inspiration for me. Or April. They are so exuberant and real and present.
Is there a song you can't wait to play live?
"soccer". I was on tour and every night they asked me, "Should we add anything to the set?" I think it's very energetic, danceable and fun. I can't wait for my big emo ballad "Toast".
"Toast" closes the EP perfectly with the lyrics: "How could I not know this was going to end?" Is it always the last song?
When the EP ended with "The End," I was like, "Ah, the chef's kiss." All right. With that thoughtful energy and big, airy synths, I wanted those three minutes to relax the listener. I want to get off the roller coaster.
Do you think "Toast" or any song has anything to do with Lady Jesus ?
I like writing about religion. I'm not super religious, but I think I'm a spiritual person. Regardless of our religion, the idea of the power we give to religious figures is something I find very interesting about human beings.
Kickflip's slogan is "Feel Like God". The greater theme of the Mother of Jesus is taking the strength and trust we give to religious leaders and transferring it to ourselves. And I think I learned that while writing it. Now that I have that stability in my life, this EP is about the strength and confidence I've found.
Is your approach to the creative process different from when you started?
When I was making my first album, I was focused on the project. This process is more general. I write as much as I can with as many people as possible in a week when I'm at home in Los Angeles. That subtle, fuzzy energy makes this EP feel like me.
In which direction do you imagine your future project?
Yes, it's funny to me because I'm still writing. There are five songs on this EP, but I've probably written 300. I already have a lot of thoughts in my head about what's in the next chapter. Once I feel like living and breathing as much Sagittarius as possible, I go back and listen to old demos. I hope to grow when the next project starts.
Is there a song that didn't make the EP you would like?
In my dreamland, I released an album of 50 songs, but I think that's what makes these five songs special. I only have fifteen minutes to tell people who I am. Each song is carefully selected.
I read in another interview that you sometimes write to fill in the blanks in track listings to fit a story. Is there a song you wrote for Sagittarius ?
The first time it really happened naturally. With Lady Jesus , I really want to tell a story from start to finish. With Sagittarius , it's not so much a chronological order as a personality slice.
What do listeners expect from the EP?
Aside from astrology, the most important thing for me is to accept myself as a person and learn to own every part of it. I hope that by listening people will find the strength to do the same. I think the reason we humans need religion and spirituality is a matter of self-reflection.
