While up-and-coming girl groups made an unparalleled impact when it came to K-pop in 2022, they weren't the only ones to earn a spot in the best music of the year. Veteran artists like Girls' Generation's Taeyeon showed why she's a juggernaut in the industry, and fourth-generation boy bands like Treasure showed her star continues to rise.
The best K-pop songs and albums of 2022 have surprised us with their sound, their lyrics and the feelings they evoke. With undeniable replay value, they will likely remain on playlists long after December.

"BTBT", BI x Soulja Boy feat. DeVita
"BTBT" may be about losing your balance in the face of romance — the title is short for bitulbiteul, which means "incredible" in Korean — but the song is unabashed in its declaration of love. Singer-songwriter BI joins Soulja Boy and DeVita on this delightful track that entices with both flowing melodies and catchy lyrics. "You say you need true love / Someone to kiss and hold you / Pretend to touch you / I can be all of that and more," BI hums. As the meaning of the lyrics becomes clearer than the pounding drums, "BTBT" begins to reflect the sound of a faster heartbeat.
"GingaMingaYo (Strange World)", Billy
With an eclectic and quirky sound, Billy stands out among dozens of up-and-coming groups struggling to make their mark in K-pop. "GingaMingaYo (Strange World)" is a prime example of this. With his singsong voice, hard rhythms, and Billy's almost overzealous singing about the uncertainties of adulthood ( gingaminga means "I'm not sure" in Korean), "GingaMingaYo" sounds downright offbeat. But also extremely bright. “Why do my parents tell me to keep calm and cool? / My friends are the only ones who can understand me,” sings Haram. To understand the extraordinary appeal of this track, you have to go a step further to speak the same language as Billy.
Hi darling
You don't want to say hello to Treasure. The song is nostalgic and futuristic. Nostalgic because their songwriting is reminiscent of early 2010s pop, futuristic because there's something about Treasure's performance, especially the rap verses by Choi Hyunsuk, Yoshi and Haruto that are so memorable. And while some elements of the track are to be expected, like the instrumental vocals and the high-intensity penultimate signature of most YG Entertainment tracks, what's wrong with familiarity if your ear itches? The song's music video features fireworks exploding in the night sky as "Hello" reaches its climax. If you could depict the inside of the ear with a drawing, it would be exactly like hearing "Hello."
Hype boy, new jeans
NewJeans' "Hype Boy" didn't just go viral in 2022 because of its rubber band dance challenge. On the contrary, the inspirational choreography only emphasizes the lively spirit of the song. Founded by ADOR, a subsidiary of HYBE, when NewJeans debuted earlier this year, the group's music excelled not in fiery intensity but in effortless subtlety. That doesn't mean that NewJeans' songs lack energy, though. "Hype Boy" has smooth rhythms and smooth instrumentals, but the soaring vocals during and after the chorus give you a double dose of serotonin.
"Love Diving", IV
Although Eugene opens the song with "I'm really interested to listen from you," it's IVE that immediately grabs our attention with the song "Love Dive." Leeseo's gentle "ooh" pulls you in from the electropop track's opening moments, and "Love Dive" becomes even more addictive as IVE's rich vocals glide over dreamy synths. The group sings a mysterious attraction that invites exploration, and this song prepares the listener to be immersed in even more IVE enchantment.

Princess Low Life: Black, Bibi
In Lowlife Princess: Noir , Bibi is a woman on a mission, and a bloody one. The singer-songwriter's debut album tells the story of the fictional Oh Geum-ji, inspired by the " Lady of Vengeance " protagonist Park Chan-wook, who as "Queen of the Underworld" seeks revenge. "Princess Low Life: The two words are incompatible in meaning," Bibi said, according to The Korea Herald , which reported that Oh Geum-ji was the artist's alter ego. "They seem to reveal the character of Oh Geum-ji, created with the emotions I've drawn from myself." Across her 12 tracks, Bibi unleashes Oh Geum-ji's inner rage. She describes herself as a weapon ("Blade") and declares herself a "bad dog" ("BIBI Vengeance"). But the artist does not only communicate his level of threat in texts. Bibi's voice, smoky and hoarse, tells a million stories. Whether humming the haunting melodies of "Animal Farm," reciting the lines of the eerie "Scum Princess," or literally screaming on "BIBI Vengeance," the artist attacks with a deeply unforgettable performance.
Sector 17 , SEVENTEEN
Face the Sun by SEVENTEEN, which was released in May, is an artistic achievement. United by the theme of warmth and passion, the nine tracks pave the way from hip-hop "Hot" to rock "Don Quijote" to pop "Shadow". But it's the band's repackaged album, released in July and featuring songs from Face the Sun plus four new ones, that's better. First off, Sector 17 present “_World” as their debut single. A warm, sunny, disco-influenced track, SEVENTEEN sing heartily about creating a new world after it all burns down in Face the Sun's latest song, "Ash." The repackaged album also includes SEVENTEEN leader's second song, "Cheers", which consists of S.Coups, Hoshi and Woozi. The track is a lively celebration that invites everyone to raise their glasses to what promises to be a good time.
INWU , Taeyeon
If INVU is the canvas, then Taeyong is the master artist, filling it with every nuance of his voice. Its silvery, piercing tone catches the eye whether you're singing angry high notes or singing softly in falsetto. And the veteran artist crosses genres and showcases her vocal prowess. With thirteen tracks, Taeyong ranges from dance-pop ("INVU") to R&B ("Some Nights") to disco ("Weekend"). The songs connect through her melancholy reflections on love as she explores feelings of loneliness: "Even though I smile harder I still feel sad/Even though I'm close to you it's far away," she sings. in "Set Yourself on Fire" and heals from past wounds ("Heart"). Bending his flutes with skill and precision, his voice conveys a spectrum of emotions.
I will never die , (G)I-dle
While "Tomboy" was one of the top-grossing K-pop songs of 2022, the pop-punk track, which charted for several weeks on Korean music streaming service Melon, earned the album I Never Die , to which he belongs, his own recognition. The eight tracks on (G)I-dle not only impress with their performance, but also with their production: Each song was written by Soyeon, Minnie or Yuqi. And as the group begins to defy stereotypes with lead single "Tomboy," refusing to become "blonde Barbie dolls" to conform to society's norms, (G)I-dle pours out its rebellious energy the following jobs. The album makes a smoother transition from "Ya" to "Escape" before returning to the hard, heavy rock "Liar". But the final song, "My Bag," a high-energy hip-hop song that all five members rap to, is the star of the project.
Indigo , R.M
Indigo is 20-year-old RM's "final archive," and the BTS leader writes an intimate chronicle of adolescence that turns journal entries into songs. The album is perhaps most evident on the single "Wild Flower," a collaboration with Youjeen, where RM paints a movingly candid picture of his relationship with the superstar. "Even before the start, I imagined an ending that I could look forward to and smile at," he says. "When everything I believed in slipped away / When all this glory became chains / Please take me from my desire." The rest of Indigo takes a closer look at the launch of these chains. "I can't lock myself in the frame, I'm moving," sings Anderson Paak in Still Life. And the meditations of the BTS leader are always specific and universal at the same time. We may not be artists like RM, but we are people in search of our voice, our place of belonging, our own "flower meadow".
