White House State Dinner Draws Names From Arts, Fashion, Business
WASHINGTON — The Joe Biden administration welcomed the biggest names in fashion, entertainment, politics and business to its first White House state dinner Thursday in honor of French President Emmanuel Macron and marked major public events in the wake of the pandemic.
Kissing was everywhere as the Bidens took to the north porch to greet the Macrons – Jill Biden in a formfitting navy Oscar de la Renta gown, Brigitte Macron in an ivory Louis Vuitton high-neck dress.
"Enjoy the evening," was Jill Biden's opening invitation as four men entered.
Other guests enter through the side entrance and seem to want it. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards came first, followed shortly by John Carney of Biden's home state of Delaware.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus stopped by the press to say that yes, she had already been to the formal dinner and that it was "very interesting". Late night host Stephen Colbert said nothing as the guests rode a cart through the festively decorated White House to the South Lawn Hot Market.

Asked how he feels about dinner with Hunter Biden as the Republicans try to investigate when they take control of the House of Representatives in January, McCarthy said: "I'm having lunch with my mom and having a good time." "
Other lawmakers are more than happy to introduce accompanying family members. Rep. With a tent and a table set for a big dinner, host Jill Biden took her French counterpart to the language museum to highlight their shared interest in learning and their growing friendship.
“We are friends,” Brigitte Macron said as she shook hands with Biden at Planet Ward. “We are friends,” Biden repeated.

The guest list was heavily influenced by major Democratic donors who helped the party achieve a better-than-expected performance in the midterm elections. Among them are Katzenberg, a major Hollywood financier; Abram Glaser, who has donated tens of thousands of dollars to Democratic causes in recent years; and Alexander Soros, son of George Soros and vice chairman of the Soros Open Society.
The red, white and blue themed dinner consisted of beef with buttered Manx lobster, shallot jam and American cheese. Dessert was orange chiffon cake with roasted pears and ice cream. American sparkling wine is served with the dish.
Since a service from the White House Porcelain Collection cannot be taken outside the Executive Residence, guests dine on rented crockery. Navy blue silk towels, red candles and red, white and blue flowers, including white irises, were placed on square and rectangular tables bearing the official colors of France.
Afternoon entertainment was hosted by New Orleans native, Grammy Award-winning former host and musical director of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, John Baptiste.
“It will be fire,” Baptiste promised before the performance.
The White House has not hosted state dinners since September 2019, largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic when large gatherings took place.
But entertainment has returned to the White House.
Thursday's dinner follows Biden's granddaughter's South Lawn wedding last month, which was attended by 250 guests. And for almost a month, thousands of people flock to the White House this month, including tourists and other holiday parties.
