Blink, we know you saw it coming. Girl group BLACKPINK, one of the most popular girl groups in the world at the moment, has been named Artist of the Year by the magazine.
On Monday, the publication ran an article about the group's accomplishments and, of course, their performance at the VMAs in August. Single 'Pink Venom' stole the show and their latest world tour, Born Pink, which runs from October 2022 to June 2023, sold out in minutes. The show, which is scheduled to run for 9 months in 27 cities, has gathered tens of thousands of fans, including superstars Selena Gomez and Usher.
Quarter, Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rose released their second studio album Born Pink in September, which set the record for the best-selling Korean girl group album, selling over two million albums. Fans still stream it religiously on YouTube, where Blackpink is the largest music group with over 83 million subscribers.
K-pop generates more than $10 billion in annual revenue, and girl groups are a major contributor. YG's success depends a lot on him. However, the group does not see its activities as a business, but rather as a passion. "If you look at it from a business perspective, we can't do it," Jenny told Time magazine . "We do this with all our hearts."
They officially debuted in 2016, becoming YG's first girl group in seven years. They gained an instant audience with their first singles "Whistle" and "Bumbayah".
The team is multicultural and they see it as a strength. Jenny, 26, was born in Seoul but moved to New Zealand as a child. Rose, 25, was born in Auckland and grew up in Melbourne. Lisa is 25 years old, she is Thai and grew up in Thailand. Jisoo, 27, hails from the small town of Konbu in South Korea and is the only one of the four who has lived in the country all his life. "We all come from different cultures," Rose said. He added that their differences are "just a plus", especially in the studio.
Girls are not limited to teams but also work on solo projects. Their first US tour of 2019 was a grueling affair that rocked them, but they learned from the experience and are better prepared this time around. "Now we know how to take care of ourselves a little better," Jenny said. "We're trying to be prepared in terms of health and mental health."
